NMR User Training

The NMR staff is happy to train any post-docs, graduate students and undergraduates associated with the University of Kansas. Training is divided into two steps.

1. Download a copy of  “Things You Should Know Before You Operate an Automated NMR Spectrometer” (PDF).  Study this document.  You must pass an oral quiz before Sarah will train you.  There are no exceptions. Also print and fill out a Training Application Form (DOCX) to give to Sarah at training.

2. Make an appointment for training with Sarah Neuenswander. Sarah will walk you through the procedure of how to acquire and process a 1D 1H NMR spectrum.  This session should take ~30 minutes.

Modern NMR spectrometers cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, so it is imperative that new users respect the instrument and use it in a manner that will insure that these spectrometers continue to produce high quality data for years to come.

The above training is designed for graduate students and post-docs in synthetic chemistry groups, who will be using the instruments routinely. We understand that some users may need the spectrometers less frequently. If all these steps sounds like too much for you the NMR lab staff is happy to run samples for you. For routine characterization of small molecules you can submit samples to our cryoprobe in ISB B143 or SBC 1004. For more sophisticated needs try our sample submission form (DOCX).

As always, let us know if you have any questions.
